Eligibility and pre-screening
Why criteria exist, and how we determine whether a study is a fit.
Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Every protocol defines who may take part. Inclusion criteria describe the characteristics needed to answer the research question; exclusion criteria identify situations where participation may not be appropriate or safe.
These criteria are set by the study sponsor and reviewed by the IRB. Our team applies them exactly as written.
What we usually ask about
During pre-screening, coordinators typically ask about your age, the condition being studied, current medications, other medical conditions, and your availability for visits.
- Age and general health history
- Diagnosis and how long you have had it
- Current medications and recent changes
- Previous participation in research
- Ability to attend scheduled visits
Frequently asked questions
Answers to questions we hear most often.
Why are eligibility criteria so specific?
Criteria keep participants safe and make results interpretable. If a study population varies too widely, the information collected becomes difficult to evaluate.
Does pre-screening commit me to anything?
No. Pre-screening is an informational conversation. You can stop at any point.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
A referral is not required, though we are glad to coordinate with your provider if you would like us to.
What documents should I have ready?
A list of your current medications and a general summary of your medical history are usually enough for a first conversation.
Can I be screened for a future study?
Screening is study-specific, but with your permission we can retain your contact information and reach out when a relevant study opens.
Wondering if you might qualify?
A short conversation is the fastest way to find out.
